The Rustic Cabin holds a very special place in the annals of Frank Sinatra history. It was here that Sinatra, working as a waiter, was first ‘discovered’ in 1939 by Harry James. Sinatra went on to join James’ band that year and the rest, as they say, is history. While the Rustic Cabin advertised itself as ‘a typical mountain lodge’, the locale, in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey was only 250 feet above sea level and located across the river from Manhattan, just two miles north of the George Washington Bridge. The Cabin was destroyed by fire in the mid 1940's. This original menu was hand signed by Harry James. We can verify the authenticity of the autograph. Was it signed the night Sinatra was first discovered ? We can't testify to that, but how often would James visit the Rustic Cabin ? Connie Haines ( James' girl singer ) told us Harry's visit was strictly to hear Sinatra. She should know. She also attended on that historic night. This is truly a one-of-a-kind collectible and can easily become the crown jewel in anyone's Sinatra collection.

JFK Inaugural Gala Invitation Set

During the campaign for President in 1960, it is well known that Frank Sinatra played a leading role in helping to get John F. Kennedy elected. After JFK was elected, Frank Sinatra was among those responsible for planning the inaugural gala event. The item pictured here is a 3-piece set. It includes the actual invitation, a contribution card, and an RSVP envelope, addressed to none other than Frank Sinatra, 1619 Broadway, New York, NY. The invitation reads: "In honor of The President-elect of the United States and Mrs. Kennedy and Vice President-elect of the United States and Mrs. Johnson, The Democratic National Committe requests the pleasure of your company at the Inaugural Gala on Thursday Evening the nineteenth of January, one thousand nine hundred and sixty-one at eight forty-five o'clock at the Armory in the City of Washington." The invitation measures 9-3/4" by 7" when folded open, as shown in the photograph. The back of the invitation has remnants of some material that might once have been used to affix this item to a backing of some sort. It does not show through to the front and, when mounted again, this would not even be visible. Overall condition of all three pieces is excellent. An absolutely stunning memento from the age of Camelot and The Rat Pack.

Sands Copa Room Dinner Menu January 23rd, 1960

This dinner menu from The Sands Copa Room is a bona-fide piece of history. Saturday night, January 23rd, 1960. It marked the very beginning of the Rat Pack's run, as they were filming Ocean's 11 at the time at the Sands. It was also about this time that future President, John F. Kennedy, famously stopped by The Sands and was introduced from the stage by Sinatra. This was what was on the menu at that time. The menu measures 11-1/2" x 16-1/2" inches. It was, at one time, folded in the middle, although the crease is not immediately visible and certainly doesn't stand out anymore. The front is perfectly clean and the back has some light smudges, though these would not be visible were you to frame this item, which you would no doubt want to do. The artwork is typical of what The Sands art department was producing at that time, which is in itself a component of the overall Sands experience. A beautiful piece of memorabilia. Only one available.

Columbia CL 2521, Get Happy, is one of the two or three most desirable Columbia 10" LPs, mostly due to the artwork, though there is some stellar singing included. This is a white hydrocal wall hanging life-cast made as display piece. This extremely rare life mask / sculpture was made for Frank Sinatra’s cameo as a gypsy in the 1963 film "The List of Adrian Messenger". Unfortunately this casting is mostly sculpted, but the sculptor and the story behind this extremely rare piece is worth its weight in gold. The story I’ve been told is that Frank Sinatra couldn’t stand the life-casting process, so he tore off the mold prematurely before it was properly set. The talented make-up artist John Chambers and equally talented sculptor Chris Mueller Jr. were left with the daunting task of fixing the cast. With Chamber’s calipers and Mueller’s sculpting tools they came up with this sculpture of Frank. The sculpture was sufficient enough to make Frank his prosthetic mask for the film and it also makes a cool display piece.

Dedicated to You: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Coltrane and Hartman. This live collection was recorded in January 2009 at the Allen Room in the Lincoln Center, New York as part of Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series. The new 12-track release features saxophonist Ernie Watts, the Laurence Hobgood Trio and string quartet, ETHEL. Dedicated To You is a tribute to one of the most beloved and beautiful recordings in jazz, John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman. On that six song album, Coltrane introduces a relatively unknown singer named Johnny Hartman. The two musicians had only just met one another. In a mere three hours though, they produce a classic. Hartman unfortunately never gains much recognition beyond this one album. Coltrane obviously fares a bit better. Kurt Elling is a stand-out choice to honor Hartman. He boasts a rich baritone with flawless intonation and an uncanny flair for storytelling, just like Hartman before him. They're also both from Chicago, which may be related to Elling's interest in this project (Elling was recently named "Chicagoan of the Year" and holds down a regular night at the Green Mill when not on tour). The supporting voice on that classic album is, of course, John Coltrane. Ernie Watts, a veteran of the LA studio scene, doesn't jump out as the obvious pick for this role. Nonetheless, Watts doesn't disappoint, though at times he sounds more like Lenny Pickett than John Coltrane. But while his tone may not match the expectations of purists, his solos compliment the vocal approach of Elling perfectly. This is not meant to be a replica of the 1963 classic. In fact, many of the tracks are from Ballads, another seminal Coltrane album recorded around the same time. It also doesn't have the spare quartet sound of the original. Elling's pianist and arranger Laurence Hobgood enlists the ETHEL string quartet to fill-out the group. This provides opportunities for a fuller orchestral feel with a few chamber interludes too. The CD's lone instrumental "What's New?" receives a bit too much care (and vibrato), which when combined with Strings starts to drift into the realm of 70's-style Muzak. The track is short and soon the band is back to business with one of the most memorial songs on the original LP, "Lush Life". Don't be put off by the Ink Spots style talking in the beginning of the second track "It's Easy To Remember". Elling proceeds to tell the fascinating story of the Coltrane/Hartman session. For those don't know the album's history, it may be surprising to learn how loose and unstructured the session really was - I suspect that Hobgood spent a bit more time preparing for this set. It's also poignant to hear of Hartman's struggle to achieve prominence as a vocalist (his fame is mostly posthumous). Dedicated to You is a live recording from Lincoln Center's lavish Allen Room. The sound quality is first-rate, the audience enthusiastic. Elling has once again shown that he's not only a lover of this music, but a big part of its future. track list 1. All Or Nothing At All 2. Viewed from the outside, there were two more: the one who had an impressive career and was a seemingly model freedom fighter; but also the one who could have done so much more, yet, capitalizing on light skin color and great looks, truckled to white society. There is good reason for James Gavin’s “Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne” to take up — when you count the notes, bibliography, discography, filmography and index — nearly 600 pages. This Lena (or these Lenas), born in 1917 and still hanging in, has had a life so rich in ups and downs as to make page after page eventful and suspenseful. This all the more so since the book is also two books in one: a thorough and fluent biography and a history of the slow social rise of black people despite crippling discrimination and stinging humiliations — a history in which Horne’s story is embedded, notwithstanding some personal jumps ahead. Miss Lena Horne, as she was usually billed, was a walking and singing self-contradiction. Though she was, as invariably stressed, beautiful — except in her somewhat scrawny legs — there wasn’t a part of her that she didn’t find fault with. Some American Indian blood on both sides of the family, as well as some white, contributed to her pale skin and exotic loveliness. She was a fascinatingly evolving singer; there wasn’t a vocal style she didn’t shed or at times revert to. Ambiguity could have been her middle name; sudden reversals characterized her attitudes toward business and romantic relations, friendships and residences, even marriages, although the second lasted 23 years, until her husband’s death. Her middle-class childhood, spent mostly in Brooklyn, could have been better: her beloved father, Teddy, skedaddled early; her actress mother, Edna, dragged Lena with her on most of her sparse show-business gigs. Cora Calhoun Horne, Lena’s strong and revered grandmother, inculcated ladylike dignity in the girl’s speech and behavior, but also distrust and avoidance of white men. Lena was farmed out fairly frequently and had to endure occasional racist slurs, beatings for minor infractions and schoolgirl mockery: she was called “little yellow bastard” because of her supposedly “white daddy.” At age 16, to the disapproval of some family members, she became a chorine at the celebrated Cotton Club, where Ethel Waters singing “Stormy Weather” had a lasting effect on her. The club was a dingier place than reputed: even most of the stars had to use its back entrance and were forbidden the customers’ bathrooms; the chorines had only a basin to relieve themselves in. But Horne impressed the stager, Clarence Robinson, as well as the Nicholas Brothers, Avon Long and Cab Calloway. When a singing job with Noble Sissle’s band became available, her parents (Edna was now married to a no-account white foreigner) had to kidnap her from the Cotton Club. At least, this was Horne’s version of things. Gavin, the author of books about Chet Baker and New York cabaret, says that “little evidence existed to back up her account.” She developed a lifelong disdain of the very nightclubs that were her steadiest source of livelihood. Teddy Horne introduced her to Louis Jones, a publicist with political aspirations; after a monthlong courtship, he married the 19-year-old Lena. The next year saw her negligible first film appearance; there followed, on Broadway, “Blackbirds of 1939,” in which she had three crummy numbers, but Brooks Atkinson, the mighty critic for The New York Times, singled her out. Soon the prestigious white bandleader and lady-killer Charlie Barnet signed her up, but in many ballrooms she wasn’t allowed to sit on the bandstand between numbers. Then came the gig at the popular Café Society Downtown, whence her leap to Hollywood. Presently a divorce suit and countersuit ensued, dragging on for several years. The head of MGM, Louis B. Mayer, liked her, but her movie roles were trifling enough to be cut when the films were shown in the South. Vincente Minnelli, with whom she may have had an affair, directed and promoted her. She had relationships with Artie Shaw, Orson Welles, Joe Louis and sundry others, most of them white. But her one true, lasting, platonic friendship was with the homosexual Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington’s arranger and pianist, who died all too young. Notoriously, a singing bubble-bath scene of hers was cut from the all-black “Cabin in the Sky” (and not seen till 1994 in “That’s Entertainment! III”); even so, the film was her biggest success. For the role she most coveted, Julie in “Show Boat,” she wasn’t even considered; it went to her good friend Ava Gardner. At first Horne disliked Lennie Hayton, a successful Hollywood arranger and conductor, but the black woman and the white Jewish man warmed to each other and became lovers. Her divorce came through: Jones got their son, Ted; Horne, their daughter, Gail. For Horne and Hayton’s interracial wedding, reprehended by both families, the couple had to escape to Paris in 1947 and keep mum for a long time. Horne’s unhappiness in Hollywood caused the couple to change residences frequently, moves that desegregated some neighborhoods. In 1942, MGM had started sending her to entertain in black Army camps. The refusal of a 3 a.m. cup of coffee to an exhausted Horne at an Alabama diner, and rotten treatment at a mostly white Army camp, gave birth to an activist. Though she sympathized much more with Malcolm X, she traveled to Martin Luther King’s funeral service in Atlanta; earlier, she had sung at a church concert attended by Medgar Evers, just days before he was killed. Meanwhile Horne’s singing evolved, and her engagements were at some of the best hotels, where previously she would have been refused overnight stay. Her style was a mix of sexiness and wit (the former she never took seriously), but also of barely suppressed rage, as she spit out words like “love.” She worked with any number of jazz greats, even though jazz was not her specialty. She would appear with the likes of Bing Crosby and Tony Bennett, though never very felicitously, and with Frank Sinatra only despite mutual antipathy. Many recordings kept coming out, some successful, some not. Horne would allow creators to do extensive work with her in mind, only to back out. Longtime collaborators, like her conductor-arranger Ray Ellis and her manager Ralph Harris (both were white; Ellis was also her lover), were dismissed suddenly. Several others lasted less long but incurred similar fates. She became wealthy — a millionaire — and gave lavish gifts to friends whom she later mostly dropped, ignoring some, Gavin says, even on their deathbeds. Finally, she banished even her husband, in whose honor she had once worn a Star of David, coming to see him as a “whitey” who “didn’t know the point of the conflict” over civil rights. Claude Thompson, her main choreographer; Jeanne Noble, her mentor in activism; Richard Schickel, co-author of her second memoir; the singer Bobby Short; and many others were all “pushed away.” Of her various regrets, having been an unloving mother seems to have been the chief one. Ted, who showed great promise, died young. Gail, despite marrying Sidney Lumet, of whom Horne at first disapproved, was treated rather better, as were, especially, Horne’s grandchildren. Characteristically, whenever a friend, particularly a male one, died, she appears to have viewed it as abandonment and betrayal. One of her last major public appearances was 25 years ago for the Kennedy Center Honors, which she earned partly for her final stage show, a solo Broadway production, “The Lady and Her Music,” opening in 1981, during which she delivered her fictionalized autobiography as martyred victim. It was her farewell to theater because, as her friend Arthur Laurents observed, “she was afraid she wasn’t good enough. She knew she could do cabaret.” Nevertheless, earlier, in the Broadway musical “Jamaica,” she had been a hit. Concerts and recordings came till late in life, the unanimous raves eliciting from her, “Too little, too late.” Now, as Gavin writes, her “final role” is “that of recluse.” John Simon is the theater critic for Bloomberg News.

Hanging out at an Italian villa with Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida sounds like a painless way to kill a vacation--and Come September is a pretty painless movie, too. Rock is a millionaire who spends a month at his home on the Riviera every year, except this year he's come early and surprised his staff, who've been running the place as a paying hotel. This is one of those comedies of sexual frustration--Rock can't get alone with Gina, because the "hotel" is overrun with American teenagers (chief among them Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin, who married after meeting on the shoot). The plot is labored, and director Robert Mulligan shows little feel for farce (he would shortly hit his stride with To Kill a Mockingbird). At least the location shooting has a nice summer breeze to it, and Darin sings "Multiplication" in a nightclub, complete with hepcat moves.

You, too, will find yourself speaking Rat Pack lingo after watching this made-for-HBO biopic about that brief and shining moment when Camelot met Hoboken-on-the-Pacific. The film does a good job of capturing the heady, anything-goes feel of the late-1950s, early-1960s era when Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and their running buddies ruled Hollywood, Las Vegas, and, it seemed, the world. The story centers on Sinatra's relationship with John F. Kennedy (William F. Petersen) before and after he was elected president. It's not particularly flattering to either man, as Sinatra pimps Kennedy into a relationship with Judith Campbell, at the same time she was the favorite consort of mob boss Sam Giancana. Ray Liotta is a forceful Sinatra (though it's not much of an impression); Joe Mantegna has the look and the sound of the surprisingly sober Dean Martin; and Don Cheadle does a great job as the racially conflicted Sammy Davis Jr. Not great cinema but it's never less than engrossing.

This brand new outing features new interpretations of great songs by one of our favorite femme vocalists. from jazzpolice.com by Andrea Canter, Contributing Editor Monday, 24 August 2009 So In Love Since placing a surprising third in the 1998 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition (behind the late Teri Thornton and Jane Monheit), Italian vocalist Roberta Gambarini has not only acclimated to life as a New York-based jazz artist, she has embraced each opportunity with increasing success, a trajectory of one of the most talented singers of her generation. After two highly regarded projects, including the Grammy-nominated Easy to Love (2006) and 2008’s You Are There with the great Hank Jones, Roberta steps out as arranger in the company of some of today’s leading instrumentalists on the stellar So in Love (EmArcy). Gambarini describes her approach to her new recording as akin to flying, when ideas and arrangements come to her “in mid-air”, like “traveling to half-known destinations.” So in Love reflects that quality of spontaneity, further enhanced by the bevy of talented musicians who join Roberta’s flight in various combinations (never exceeding a quintet)—frequent collaborator Roy Hargrove and her long-time hero James Moody; pianists Tamir Hendelman, Eric Gunnison and Gerald Clayton; drummers Jake Hanna, Montez Coleman, Jeff Hamilton and Al Foster; bassists Chuck Berghofer, Neil Swainson and George Mraz. All but two tracks were recorded in 2008 at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, the other pair shortly following 9-11at Red Barn in Big Sur when Roberta traveled from a devastated New York City to perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival. And despite, or perhaps because of, the vast talents of her cohorts, Roberta carries the melody throughout the set list without depending on her bands, which offer tasteful comping and elegant soloing, but leave the melody line to Roberta’s strength and control of a voice that seems to be getting fuller and richer over time, a throwback in some ways to the great ladies of song, Ella and Sarah, yet bathed in a 21st century creative spirit. And with several different configurations, the feel of the whole could be compromised, but here it all flows together as if synchronicity had been planned in detail. Warning: This music is likely to trigger a desire to grab a partner and slow-dance. The set opens with Cole Porter’s title track, taken at a seductively slow tempo with accompaniment only from Hendelman, who stays well behind singer. Gambarini fills in the melody while the pianist fills in-between. They take just one chorus, and less is more. Roberta begins “Day In, Day Out” acapella over Jake Hanna’s cymbals before a moving into a fast tempo run with the trio (adding Hendelman and Berghofer). Cole Porter again, the first verse of “Get Out of Town” (arranged by Hendelman) is sung over a sparse accompaniment before James Moody joins on alto sax, and the quartet engages in a steady swing. Roberta Gambarini©Andrae CanterI am quite fond of Patsy Cline’s version of Willie Nelson’s iconic “Crazy,” but Roberta almost channels the legend of country without losing her jazz heart. Here her tone and confidence belie the fact that she did not grow up on this music. Again, as on the first track, she takes it even slower than slow, bassist Berghofer keeping the deep country pulse moving. Roy Hargrove’s flugelhorn solo brings it back to bebop, but the two worlds seem to make good partners here. The classic Arlen/Mercer “That Old Black Magic” moves with a midtempo swing, and Roberta’s conversational phrasing makes you feel you are sitting right with her as she explains her intentions. Eric Gunnison (piano) takes off as bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Montez Coleman pull the tune along at a good clip. Young monster pianist Gerald Clayton sits in with Berghofer and Hanna on “Estate,” where for once an Italian sings the Italian lyrics with the intended passion; Clayton’s solo is delicate and perfect. Roberta’s arrangements of Lennon/McCartney offer a nice change of pace, the pop hits “Golden Slumbers” and “Here, There and Everywhere” transformed in a medley with the Hendelman Trio. Again, sweet and slow, Hendelman’s syncopation gives these tunes new rhythmic energy. Jointly arranged by Gambarini and Hendelman, “I See Your Face Before Me” starts with an acapella verse. Chuck Berghofer’s elegantly slow pulse slips into step with Roberta, who makes the most of every vowel. James Moody adds soft phrases to fill the spaces before turning on the charm with a lush solo. A third Cole Porter classic, “From This Moment On” starts with bass (Swainson) and drums (Coleman), uptempo but gentle, with Roberta’s light, skittering phrasing. As Gunnison joins in, she adds more weight to her notes, later presenting a scat master class, prompting her drummer to engage in debate. Gunnison holds his own workshop in speed-demon bop swinging. The only quintet arrangement of the set, “This Is Always” features both Moody and Hargrove, with Jeff Hamilton on drums along side Hendelman and Berghofer. Roberta engages in duet through the first verse with Berghofer; drums and piano join in the second with another gentle swing, while the horns come in for the subtle third verse. It’s hard not to get up and dance, especially when Moody sings on alto sax and Hargrove on muted trumpet, the two horns together weaving an exquisite tapestry. Roberta returns with more assertion, “this is a love...this is always.” Blues and humor abound on Johnny Griffin’s “You Ain’t Nothing But a JAMF” with Roberta’s lyrics. Use your imagination to fill in the acronym—the lyrics make it pretty clear, and even her scat carries a clear message, delightfully delivered over Swainson’s walking bass lines and Coleman’s bold percussion. Gunnison’s solo mirrors the singer’s sassy swagger. The two tracks recorded in Big Sur with Gunnison, Mraz and Foster shortly following the 9/11 disaster are among the best. “You Must Believe in Spring” is beautiful, emotive, and in this context, hopeful. Enrico and Andrea Morricone’s music from Cinema Paridiso is featured in a medley of the main theme and “For Elena.” And Roberta’s rendering delivers an apt message following 9/11, singing “there is no beginning and no end, the moment only dies to live again... the past is like a lover’s kiss, it never fades away.” She duets with Mraz as “For Elena” gets underway, the bassist also taking one of the more stunning solos of the set. In closing the set on what might otherwise have been a trite choice, Roberta transcends the usual presentation of “Over the Rainbow,” in part by trimming instrumentation to just piano (Hendelman), in part by her utter control of pitch; in part by slowing it down such that each note is a complete thought, a complete feeling that drips into the next. With only one full run-through, and no soloing from Hendelman, Roberta nevertheless extends this track to four minutes of pure silk.The sum of So in Love is like pure silk--sheerly elegant, shimmery, fine textured, begging to be touched, simply radiant. Entitled “Crazy Love,” after a 1970 Van Morrison tune of the same name, the album is due Oct. 13 on 143/Reprise Records. Bublé recorded “Crazy Love” in New York and Vancouver and co-wrote both of album’s two original songs — “Hold On” and “Haven’t Met You Yet,” which is the lead single and debuts at radio on Aug. 31. The remaining 11 tracks include covers of “Cry Me A River,” “Georgia On My Mind” and “Baby (You’ve Got What It Takes),” which features Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. “I dug way deeper and was more introspective on this one,” Bublé said in a statement. “Basically, I sang the truth — made each song autobiographical — and you can definitely hear the difference.” “Crazy Love” was produced by David Foster, Bob Rock and Humberto Gatica, and Bublé says it was recorded more organically than his past records. “The musicians and I all sat in the room, recorded it right from the floor and we let the sounds all come together and bleed into one another. It’s not contrived. Not too perfect. It just feels really good,” he explains. Bublé’s last studio album, 2007’s “Call Me Irresponsible,” reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has sold 1.9 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. LOS ANGELES — Concord Records’ release Christmas With Sinatra & Friends, features both classic and rare holiday songs by some of America’s most treasured vocalists including Mel Tormé, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Ray Charles, Betty Carter and of course Sinatra himself singing eight of the collection’s 12 songs, licensed from Frank Sinatra Enterprises (FSE). The choice Sinatra performances celebrated here were meticulously and thoughtfully selected to include both traditional and rare holiday tunes. Among the non-traditional are “Christmas Memories,” by ace arranger and long-time Sinatra collaborator Don Costa with lyricists Alan & Marilyn Bergman and “An Old Fashioned Christmas,” written by the legendary composers Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen. Jimmy Webb’s “Whatever Happened to Christmas” and “Mistletoe and Holly,” co-written by Sinatra himself will undoubtedly add to Sinatra’s special place among seasonal favorites. Cahn and Van Heusen also wrote “The Christmas Waltz” the renowned ballad that Sinatra first recorded in 1957. Sinatra additionally offers Harry Simeone’s “The Little Drummer Boy”, Johnny Marks’ “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” (which set to music the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) and the beloved “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” written in 1934 by J. If Johnny Mercer had written only those tunes he'd be immortal. But he also wrote "Moon River," ''Jeepers Creepers," ''Dream," ''Hooray for Hollywood," ''I Remember You," ''Birth of the Blues," ''In the Cool Cool Cool of the Evening," ''Skylark" and "Glow Worm." Watching "Johnny Mercer: The Dream's on Me" — which debuted last month on cable's TCM and is now out on DVD — is a revelation. One guy wrote the lyrics to all those (and many other) great songs? Bruce Ricker's documentary follows Mercer (1909-1976) from Georgia to the big time and his partnerships with some of the greatest composers in pop music. He introduced a specifically American vernacular into song lyrics; Tony Bennett proclaims that "Johnny Mercer is American literature." Others argue he stands alongside other Southern authors like William Faulker, Tennessee Williams and Eudora Welty. Mercer went to Hollywood and wrote some of the great songs of the golden age of movie musicals, winning four Oscars (and four times that many nominations). He was a founder of Capitol Records, where he defied industry convention by signing black jazzman Nat King Cole and maintaining a mixed-race roster. He had a Broadway hit in "Lil' Abner." But mostly he wrote (and often sang) fantastic songs, songs that became part of the American idiom. Ricker (who in the late '70s made "Last of the Blue Devils," a documentary about Kansas City jazz and one of the best jazz movies ever ) keeps things hopping with lots of movie clips, snippets from Mercer's many TV appearances, photos from the family archives and interviews with his collaborators and admirers. This doc is mostly about the music, though it does examine Mercer's affair with Judy Garland (some of his most romantic tunes were inspired by her), a relationship that lasted 30 years despite their both being married to others. And Mercer was a mean drunk who would savagely insult his friends, then send flowers the next day. Produced by Clint Eastwood, who appears occasionally to discuss Mercer with others, this package has a second DVD highlighted by 10 performances of Mercer standards by the likes of Jamie Cullum, John Williams, Audra McDonald, Michael Feinstein, Dr. John and Cleo Laine. Plus there's a DVD gallery of Mercer's fine watercolor paintings. It's a fitting tribute to one of the great voices in American arts.

Adam (Sammy Davis Jr.) is a celebrated yet self destructive jazz musician and womanizer. Possessing a mean temper with a short fuse, he also has a serious drinking problem. In the opening scenes we are introduced to Adam leading his band in a sensuous slow number to an appreciative audience at a jazz club. When a drunken audience member insists he play something up-tempo, the volatile Adam abruptly stops playing and nearly assaults his heckler before storming out of the club and hopping a plane back to New York without explanation. Arriving home drunk with a sexy stewardess whose name he can't remember (a very lovely Lola Falana in her first screen role, which amounts to a brief cheesecake walk-on) Adam inconveniently discovers his apartment has been loaned for the week-end by his best friend (played by Ossie Davis) to a respected, elderly jazz musician (Louis Armstrong) and his chaperon/grand-daughter, a young civil rights activist (Cicely Tyson). Honored by the presence of the senior musician and attracted to his grand- daughter's sharp wit, politic-ism, and natural beauty (unlike the other African American actresses in this film, Tyson wears her hair in a short afro and wears little to no make-up). To his best friend's dismay, Adam attempts to embark upon a serious relationship with the activist, and to meet her challenge to him to be "nothing less and nothing less" than what what he is, "a man. With the support of his no-nonsense girlfriend and his young protégé (Frank Sinatra Jr.) Adam's efforts to tame his drinking and his anger look promising until an unexpected confrontation with the police tips the scale. Neither the elder musician's (Armstrong) brand of courteous subservience nor Tyson's subscription to non- violent protest works for Adam, In an era where his art cannot shield him from the stigma and crisis of his race, Adam is a time-bomb waiting to happen. Davis' performance is riveting as is Tyson's. The issues presented in this film were raw at the time of its making, and Davis and Tyson present African American characters that were almost unprecedented in their dramatic intensity and three dimensionality--an exception would be Ivan Dixon and Abbey Lincoln's startling performances in "Nothin' But AMan", (1961). Rat-pack bad boy Peter Lawford joins the cast as Adam's powerful and vindictive agent who, after twice being humiliated by Adam (don't miss the scene in famed NY restaurant, 21), blackballs him, then forces him back to the humiliation of the segregated south. Also look for a brief yet strong performance from an uncredited Jan'et DuBois ("Willona" on 1970s TV show, "Good Times") as Adam's pride-less sometimes girlfriend, and Academy award winning actor Morgan Freeman an extra in a party scene featuring singer Mel Torme.

In 1967, Frank Sinatra teamed up with Brazilian singer, pianist, guitarist, composer and songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim to record an album that married the Chairman’s signature vocals with rhythms from the master of bossa nova. The resulting album, Francis Albert Sinatra/Antonio Carlos Jobim, reached #19, remaining on Billboard’s rock-dominated album chart for 28 weeks. Forty-four years later, on May 4, 2010, Concord Music Group, on license from Frank Sinatra Enterprises (FSE), will release a deluxe reissue of the Sinatra/Jobim classic including all ten songs from the original album plus seven songs from a subsequent collaboration between the two, and three songs from that session that were not released until decades later, when they were included in a box set. Sinatra/Jobim: The Complete Reprise Recordings features digital remastering and expanded liner notes by Stan Cornyn, longtime head of creative services at Warner/Reprise and author of the book about the Warner Music Group, Exploding. Sinatra and Jobim gathered at Hollywood’s Western Recorders for three nights, January 30 through February 1, 1967. Jobim brought the beat in the form of bossa nova percussionists and arrangers. Sinatra supplied the producer (Sonny Burke), the string arranger/conductor (Claus Ogerman) and the rest of the orchestra. The resulting session produced ten songs including the classic “The Girl From Impanema” plus “Dindi,” “How Insensitive [Insensatez],” “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars” and six others. (After bidding até a vista to Jobim, Sinatra, on the high of making one of his finest albums ever, stayed at the studio to record a duet with daughter Nancy that would reach #1 on the charts, “Something Stupid.”) Two years later, Sinatra and Jobim returned to Western Recorders to record ten more bossa novas for a shorter-titled follow-up: Sinatra-Jobim. Replacing Ogerman was a 26-year-old long-haired arranger named Eumir Deodato (later to be known for his 1973 jazz version of Richard Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra [2001]”). The songs were all written or co-written by Jobim, many with unusual melodic twists. Producer Burke enlisted conductor Morris Stoloff to ensure a pop feel to the session. After three nights, the album was wrapped, and was readied for release in the fall of 1969. The eight-track version of the album had shipped when the call was placed to Warner/Reprise’s Burbank, Calif. offices. It was Sinatra, demanding that the label “kill the album,” so Warner recalled most of the recordings. A 2005 Goldmine story reported that the rare eight-track would command $5000. Sinatra later agreed to permit Reprise to release seven of the Sinatra-Jobim vocal tracks on the album Sinatra & Company. It reached #73 and remained on the album chart for 15 weeks in 1971. More than 40 years later, the airport in Rio has been named Antonio Carlos Jobim International. And an American postage stamp honored Frank Sinatra. And the Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim and Sinatra-Jobim albums have been combined to form Concord’s Sinatra/Jobim: The Complete Reprise Recordings set.
